Local author brings the magic of the National Forest through children’s books

Nestled on the edge of the National Forest, storyteller and illustrator Kirsty Howarth lives with her family in a small village where woodlands, meadows, and wildlife are just a short stroll away. Inspired by the curiosity of her young children, Kirsty creates picture books that capture the magic of outdoor adventures and imaginative play, encouraging little ones to see the wonder in the world around them.

Kirsty’s love for nature began in her childhood. Growing up in a former mining town in the Midlands, she spent her days roaming woods, meadows, and fields with her siblings and friends. Those long, unhurried hours outdoors, filled with freedom, creativity and discovery, left a lasting impression and shaped both her values and her storytelling.

Her debut book, Willow’s Wood, introduced young readers to the enchanting world of Willow. It was quickly followed by Willow Meets the Trees and Willow Meets the Garden Birds. Beautifully illustrated and thoughtfully written for Early Years learning, each title combines gentle rhymes, fascinating nature facts, and simple activities for children to enjoy. They are more than just stories; they are invitations to explore, wonder and play and for every copy of Willow Meets the Trees sold, Kirsty will make a donation to the National Forest.
